3 Common Summer Illnesses You Should Know About
April 5, 2018
For most of us, summer means out of town trips, swimming at the beach, relaxing by the pool or grilling outdoors with family and friends.
Summertime is the most enjoyed time of the year because of our unforgettable experiences and great memories with our loved ones. The best way to enjoy our holiday is when we are in good health, so arm yourself with some knowledge and a little bit of know-how to avoid getting sick.
1. Heat stroke
Anyone who is exposed, for long hours, under the heat of the sun may be at a greater risk of heat stroke. This occurs when the body temperature elevated and you get dehydrated. Heat stroke can be fatal if not treated immediately and properly.
Common symptoms are high body temperature (from 41 degrees Celsius and up), headache, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, vomiting, fatigue and muscle cramps or aches. So when you’re outdoors, always have easy access to refreshments, drink lots of water and avoid staying out for prolonged hours.
This is an emergency case, don’t take it for granted!
2. Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection which is considered as a serious illness. There is no specific treatment for this, so having a strong immune system helps a lot in fighting the virus. You need to go to the hospital immediately if you have the following symptoms: a high fever (40 degrees celsius) for almost 3 days accompanied by a severe headache, muscle/joint pains, stomach ache, rashes or vomiting.
Let us help one another in keeping our country dengue-free with these prevention tips:
1. Cleanliness starts at home and in our community
Remove stagnant water on spare tires and open containers
Replace water in flower vases and ponds regularly
Dispose your garbage properly
Declutter your house and yard
2. Apply an anti-mosquito lotion that protects you for 8-10 hours a day. Re-apply as needed.
- 3. Spray insecticide on mosquito swarming areas
4. Repair or replace damaged screen doors and windows
Prevention is always better than cure so don’t wait ‘til somebody gets sick especially if you have kids at home. Act now!
3. Food Poisoning
Did you know that foodborne illnesses are more prevalent in summer? Bacteria grow faster in hot temperature that is why we need to handle food safely and properly. Here are some tips how:
a. When doing some grocery shopping, aside from checking the expiration dates, check the packaging from any dents or tears because it could signify possible contamination. - b. Do not defrost meat out of the fridge.
c. Wash your hands with soap and water before handling any food.
d. Cook food thoroughly.
e. Leftover food should be stored in the fridge. Consume it within 2 days.
People who are experiencing food poisoning have the following symptoms: abdominal pain, fever, vomiting and diarrhea so drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. If condition does not improve within two days, seek medical care immediately.
Always remember that the greatest wealth is health.
No need to worry about hospital or treatment expenses, for as little as Php69 per month your protection is guaranteed!
